Integration as a catalyst for assimilation

چکیده
We draw a distinction between the social integration and economic assimilation of migrants, and study an interaction between the two. We define social integration as blending into the host country’s society, and economic assimilation as acquisition of human capital that is specific to the host country’s labor market. We show that a non-integrated migrant finds it optimal to acquire a relatively limited quantity of human capital; with fellow migrants constituting his only comparison group, a non-integrated migrant does not have a relativedeprivation-based incentive to close the income gap with the natives. However, when a migrant is made to integrate, his social proximity to the natives exposes him to relative deprivation, which in turn prompts him to form more destination-specific human capital in order to increase his earnings and narrow the income gap with the natives. In this way, social integration becomes a catalyst for economic assimilation.

Enhanced Predictions of Tides and Surges through Data Assimilation (TECHNICAL NOTE)
The regional waters in Singapore Strait are characterized by complex hydrodynamic phenomena as a result of the combined effect of three large water bodies viz. the South China Sea, the Andaman Sea, and the Java Sea. This leads to anomalies in water levels and generates residual currents. Numerical hydrodynamic models are generally used for predicting water levels in the ocean and seas. But thei...
متن کاملThe Integrative Role of IT in Product and Process Innovation: Growth and Productivity Outcomes for Manufacturing
The assimilation of IT for business process integration plays an integrative role by providing an organization with the ability to exploit innovation opportunities with the purpose of increasing their growth and productivity. Based on survey data obtained from 309 Canadian manufacturing SMEs, this study aims at a deeper understanding of the assimilation of IT for business process integration wi...
متن کاملFit for Continuous Integration: How Organizations Assimilate an Agile Practice
Despite being a cornerstone of agile development, surprisingly little is known about how organizations assimilate continuous integration (CI) and what organizational changes the practice implies. Through a systematic literature review complemented by case study research we address this gap and develop a conceptual framework describing organizational implications of CI assimilation. We employ ad...
متن کاملCapabilities of data assimilation in correcting sea surface temperature in the Persian Gulf
Predicting the quality of water and air is a particular challenge for forecasting systems that support them. In order to represent the small-scale phenomena, a high-resolution model needs accurate capture of air and sea circulations, significant for forecasting environmental pollution. Data assimilation is one of the state of the art methods to be used for this purpose. Due to the importance of...

Meta-heuristic algorithms inspired by the natural processes are part of the optimization algorithms that they have been considered in recent years, such as genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization, ant colony optimization, Firefly algorithm. Recently, a new kind of evolutionary algorithm has been proposed that it is inspired by the human sociopolitical evolution process. This new algorith...
